preparing for my baby
Smoking
Giving up smoking will give your baby a healthier start in life
before and after birth. Smoking will:
- send carbon monoxide and nicotine into your baby’s lungs
and bloodstream
- cause your baby to get less oxygen
- make your baby’s heart beat faster than it should
- mean that your baby may not grow properly inside you
- mean that your baby is more likely to suffer from asthma, chest
infections etc.
It is never too late to stop smoking even in the last few weeks
of pregnancy.
There is a special service in Redbridge for pregnant women and
new mothers who want to stop smoking. You can get one-to–one
advice you come along to a group. This is a free, confidential
NHS service.
So if you want information or support to stop smoking contact:
RedQuit : 020 8926 5275
You can also ask your midwife to refer you.
